Free, Easy Outdoor Activity for Young Kids – the DIY Obstacle Course

By: Lyndsay Crews

Warmer weather is coming which means I’m looking for outdoor summer activities to do with my preschoolers. Yep, it’s time to make your driveway into an obstacle course. For my preschoolers, I’ve found that it’s about 3 minutes of drawing, followed by about 30 minutes of sitting in the shade sipping on a drink. And it’s free!

Needs:

  • Sidewalk chalk
  • Driveway/sidewalk

Use sidewalk chalk to draw a circle around the number 1 (starting point of obstacle course).  Then, draw a line on your driveway to a circled number 2. You decide how to tell your kids to get from 1 to 2. At our house, straight lines are for running, little boxes are for tiptoeing, big circles are for jumping, etc.  (You can mention if they get off course, they step into lava or whatever.) Draw a path from circled number 2 to circled number 3, and then make them tip toe on the boxes to number 4. And so on….. Other ideas: zigzag line – walk sideways, railroad tracks- walk backwards, Arrows: Hop. Eventually, the kids start taking the chalk from me and drawing tasks for their own obstacle course. As playing with preschoolers outside goes, it’s pretty good.
